What is Kind EXT?

Extinction is a basic principle in ABA that involves withholding reinforcement from the challenging behavior, in order to stop or decrease that behavior. Some practitioners use extinction by implementing "planned ignoring". This strategy can be cold, distressing, traumatizing, and ultimately unethical.

Kind Extinction takes a more compassionate approach. Practitioners provide comfort, emotional validation, and positive attention, without directly reinforcing the challenging behavior.

The recent research article on "kind extinction", is a reminder that basic ABA procedures can be implemented more compassionately, caring, and ethically.
