Functions of Behavior

When analyzing behavior, we use functions to determine the purpose that a behavior serves. Behaviors usually occur to get something or get out of something. The four main functions of behavior can be remembered using the acronym SEAT.

  • Sensory/Automatic

  • Escape/Avoid

  • Attention

  • Tangible/Access

**It is important to note that behavior may also occur due to medications or other medical conditions. Practitioners should consult with the individual's PCP before implementing interventions.
